To determine the strength of the wood, you should first double check to make sure you will be installing your flooring over plywood. Since tile is often very heavy, the wood should be of high standards and thickness should be considered since it will be holding a lot of weight. Particleboard and interior grade plywood are not considered appropriate for tile floor installation and must be replaced. The next thing to do once the strength of the wood has been established it must be smoothed of any texture variations. The best way to smooth the wood is to use a sander. There are several options for sanding, from sandpaper to commercial grade sanders available at your local home improvement store. Vinyl floors should be removed first and replace any damaged wood base components before you begin tile floor installation.
